Additional Information About American Samoa National Park

There are three volcanic islands 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii. They are called Tutuila, Ta’u, and Ofu. This national park is the most remote and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. It has beautiful coral reefs, and just off Tau, the largest reef ever found was found.

This park also has five rain forests, and the 3,000-foot-high sea cliffs on the island of Ta’u are the highest in the world. The waters at its base, which have been named a National Marine Sanctuary, are home to almost 1,000 different kinds of fish, as well as humpback seals and sea turtles.

More than 350 kinds of birds, like the rare red-headed cardinal honeyeater, live on the islands. But the only mammals that live on the islands are three kinds of bats.

Archeologists have found star mounds, adze quarries, and graves from the ancient Polynesian culture all over the area.
