Firearms Information in Great Sand Dunes National Park

Since February 22, 2010, people who can legally own guns under federal, state, and local laws can do so in this park. Before entering Great Sand Dunes National Park, it is your responsibility to know and follow all state, local, and federal gun laws.

There are places in the park where guns are not allowed by federal law (think federal buildings). These places are marked with signs at all public entrances. You also cannot discharge your firearm while in the park.

Hunting in Great Sand Dunes National Park

Great Sand Dunes National Park is not a place where hunting is allowed, but licensed hunters can hunt in Great Sand Dunes National Preserve during the legal times of the year.

Additional Information About Great Sand Dunes National Park

The sand dune field is like a gigantic playground. It has an area of 30 square miles, and the highest dune is 750 feet high. The silky sand trails created by others will beckon you to come sledding down the beach and jumping in.

You can also go horseback riding, beautiful driving, picnicking, hiking, and camping, and you can even summit a few 14,000- and 13,000-foot peaks in this area, which isn’t bad considering the dunes are the main attraction (Crestone Needle, Crestone Peak, Cleveland Peak and Mount Herard).

This park is ideal for stargazers due to its high elevation (8,200 feet) and remote location. The park hosts numerous nighttime astronomy activities during the year from May–September.
