Firearms Information in Theodore Roosevelt National Park

It is permitted under federal law for people who are allowed to carry weapons in the home state or locality to do so in this park. To be in violation of the law is to possess a handgun at a “federal facility,” which includes any building owned or leased by the federal government and used on a regular basis by federal personnel. Signs prohibiting the possession of firearms will be displayed at all public entrances of buildings meeting this criteria. The same state statute may also prohibit weapons in privately owned or -operated facilities within the park’s limits.

Additional Information About Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The park’s sedimentary cliffs have been shaped into bizarre forms by weather and wind. Little Missouri River flows through this park, but don’t let that fool you; it’s not as severe as it looks. It is home to bison, bighorn sheep, and elk, and features both grasslands and wooded gullies, as well as wildflower meadows and juniper groves.

Theodore Roosevelt “bagged a buffalo” in the Dakota Territory prior to his 1901 presidential campaign. In regards to this country, he declared, “Here is where the romance of my life began.” Another quote: “Without the lessons I received in North Dakota, I never would have been president.”

The Maltese Cross Cabin, Roosevelt’s first house, is still in existence. To show his appreciation for Roosevelt, President Jimmy Carter created the first and only national park in the United States to bear a person’s name.
