Buyer's Guide

Glock 17 Shoulder Holster - to Look For in a Concealed Carry Holster

Glock 17 Shoulder Holster, sometimes referred to as a soft box, is a small, quick, easy to install holster that attaches to your belt with a quick release buckle. This holster will enable you to carry your handgun securely and comfortably inside your waistband without having to remove it. While some have claimed benefits such as increased ease of use, others say that the material used to construct the holster results in friction and is not comfortable to wear. This article will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each type of outside the waistband holsters and clarify which one (or multiple types) may be right for you.

Soft Box The soft box is an offshoot of the hard box style of holsters and is designed to fit securely in the waistband with a fastener to hold the strap tight to the belt. There are three sizes of these holsters available: small, medium, and large. They are manufactured with an open top allowing access to your belt loops; open top designs also allow more concealment options by exposing just a small section of the outside of the belt. The Alien Gear Holsters offers the softbox in several different configurations including open top, closed top, and tactical ankle straps. There are also several different color variations offered by Alien Gear including black & tan, desert sand, gray, and black & dark grey.

Hard Shell These types of outside the waistband holsters are designed to attach to belt loops through your pants and then to your shoulders. They are most commonly used for concealment purposes but can be modified to work with other styles of belt loops as well. They offer no concealment options. This is primarily due to their construction. They feature an interior spring steel shell that rides up and down the back of the gun.

Cross Draw This type of design is the opposite of the open top design. This type allows for easier access to the gun when worn on the belt and can be a great choice for everyday use. It does not allow easy access to the firearm. Many people opt for this type of holster based on reviews of how easily they are able to draw the gun. The best glock 17 shoulder holster offers a cross draw with a lanyard or buckle clip.

Thumb Break - If you prefer to be able to remove your handgun from service, consider an option with a thumb break. This is a feature located on the bottom of many full sized glocks. With a thumb break, the top of the gun is removed and it can be placed in the crossdraw positioning. There are some Alien Gear holsters that allow this option with the use of a removable sleeve or magnetic pin.

Tactical Leg holster - If your preferred method of carrying a handgun while outdoors is with the use of a belt clip, you will want to consider a tactical leg holster. This is a unique design that features a belt clip for stowing the gun. This type of full size leather, nylon, or other material is made with high durability leather and is popular among professional military and law enforcement personnel. It does offer some cantered edges and should be well padded. Most are adjustable and can be worn over pants and shirt or over duty shirts.

Abide by all regulations for carrying a handgun and take comfort in knowing that your pistol is properly secured. While there are many options available, you still need to consider the three major areas: retention, comfort, and accessibility. When choosing a quality holsters, be sure to check out all three areas so that you get the best value for your money. If you are concerned with comfort, you will want to look for a quality leather, nylon, or other material and make sure it fits snugly. Look for a quick draw canteen, quick draw wrist strap, or other features that help reduce fatigue.

If you are more concerned about concealment, you will want to focus on the quick draw speed and canteen. If you plan to use your handgun retention, look for a holsters that offer a good amount of cantering. If you are looking for open carry, you may not be concerned with concealment, and you want to look at the overall length, open draw speed, and canteen. All these aspects will affect your comfort level and help you determine which the right model for you is.
