Firearms Information in Acadia National Park

On February 22, 2010, a new legislation went into effect regarding guns possession within a national park. Now you can carry within Acadia National Park. Any firearms carried into a national park unit by a visitor must be carried in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Keep in mind that federal law forbids the possession of guns in some park buildings. There are signage at the entrances of these areas.

Hunting in Acadia National Park

Hunting and trapping are prohibited within the park. But there are good hunting areas in other areas close by between November 1-30, because it is Maine’s deer hunting season.

Additional Information About Acadia National Park

Acadia, in its original French, literally means “paradise on Earth.” Around 12,000 years ago, retreating glaciers carved out a country full of lakes and formed the jagged granite cliffs you see today on Mount Desert Island.

In 1910, wealthy businessman John D. Rockefeller Jr. purchased this property. Because of his concern for the area’s preservation, he donated 10,000 acres, purchased additional land, and began constructing carriage routes.

Now, you can fish for mackerel, bluefish, and striped bass in Somes Sound, which is accessible via the park’s 120 miles of twisting roads and trails. Incredible vistas of the Atlantic Ocean may be seen from the park, as well.

And atop Cadillac Mountain, the northernmost point of the Atlantic coast, residents get to view the sunrise before anyone else in the United States. Wild blueberry bushes, white-tailed deer, and a pink sand beach that leads to waters teeming with porpoises and whales all contribute to Acadia’s paradisiacal reputation.
