Additional Information About Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is a breathtaking destination in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, a large area home to 1,600 kilometers of streams. There are hundreds of large sequoia trees in Mariposa Grove, including the 1,800-year-old Grizzly Giant, which stands 209 feet tall and dominates the area. The plunge of 2,425 feet makes Yosemite Falls the world’s fifth-highest.

Half Dome, a much more remarkable vertical sheered peak caused by earthquakes and weathering, stands at nearly a mile in height. Experienced and daring rock climbers go to it and the surrounding granite monolith El Capitan, which stands at an astounding 3,593 feet.

Yosemite is one of the few places in the United States to observe a lunar rainbow, which only appears during the summer when a full moon generates enough light for the mist of a waterfall to refract its beams.

Also found here are yellow-bellied marmots, 262 species of birds, and the peregrine falcon, the world’s fastest animal, which can dive at speeds of up to 200 meters per second. These endangered Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep wear GPS collars so scientists can track their whereabouts and assess their health.
