Although a few small pistols and revolvers still utilize the modern .22 Short, which was originally designed for self-defense, it is mostly used as a quiet practice round by recreational shooters. Shooting ranges at fairgrounds and arcades were common places to use the .22 Short, and numerous rifle manufacturers created “gallery” versions specifically for this caliber. The.22 Short was used in the Olympic 25 metre quick fire pistol competition until 2004 due to a low recoil and high intrinsic accuracy, and they were used in the shooting portion of contemporary pentathlon tournaments before they converted to air pistols.
