Buyer's Guide

What Are the Best Holsters For Duty Hunters and Pistols?

Choosing the best holsters and gun holders is a personal decision depending on what you need it for. If you are going to use your handgun heavily, you will want to choose a high quality leather holster instead of some cheap plastic one. If you are planning on spending a little time in the woods or taking target practice, you will probably prefer a pistol retention kydex holster instead of some cheap plastic one.

You will need to decide if you will carry more than one type of handgun, or if you will use it exclusively for self defense. Some of the best holsters available are those made with ballistic nylon. This material resists tear and wear. If you are an avid hunter, you may prefer some kind of leather, or even hybrid options that combine function and style.

The best holsters and gun holders are the ones that allow you to have good retention, are comfortable to carry, and provide a strong base for support. Most of the best open carry holsters are made with heavy duty rubber on the frame and adjustable cant. This is to make sure that they will not fall apart after years of use. They also have a trigger guard so that your gun is secure.

A popular choice for concealment is an owb holster. These come in both a open and closed position. For those people that like to regularly carry their weapon, the open position is a great option. This allows quick access to your firearm when you need it. On the other hand, if you are only going to be carrying it for hunting, or self defense, a closed position will work well. It does not permit easy accessibility to your firearm should you be caught by a criminal.

Another good option for concealment is the belt clip holster. With this you can fasten your weapon to your belt using a small quick draw loop. Some even have clips built right into them making it even more secure. However, be careful with your weapon since these have a tendency to shoot forward when being pulled.

The belt clip also works quite well for many different items. For instance, these fit very nicely around a handheld computer or PDA. A popular option is a paddle clip which fits nice and snug on the belt. In order to get a good fit you want to make sure that the holster clips are seated properly. After that, simply push the clip forward until it rests firmly against your pants. Because of how quickly the clip attaches, a little pressure is required to get a good fit.

For those people that are concerned about being able to reach their firearm quickly, an open end is a great option. These are typically used with open end pants, but can be used with most other styles of pants as well. In fact, this particular type of clip usually provides the most accurate shooting accuracy for an open end design.

appendix carry holsters are one of the most popular concealed carry options. Not only do they provide a sturdy option for carrying a firearm, they are also extremely convenient because the entire holster is built into the pants. This leaves an unobstructed section of the leg available for the time your weapon is not being carried. This type of holster positioning makes it easy to transport a handgun while keeping it close to your body at all times.

If concealment is more of a preference than a necessity, there are also options for hip holsters. Typically used when carrying a pistol in close proximity to the body, these can be adjusted to provide either more or less cover for the user. The main benefit to this type of holster is that it is easy to adjust to the size of the user. The legs of these types of holsters generally stop at the waistline of the pants, which allows for the full concealment potential. In addition, they often have adjustable retention, which allows for the gun to be held in a comfortable position even after the initial firing of the weapon.

A strong alternative to the open end kydex holster is the passive retention kydex. Similar to the open end design, passive retention kydex's move along belt loops and are worn around the waist instead of over the shoulder. Because of the way the kydex moves, the user is not able to draw the gun with traditional methods. Instead, the holster places the gun closer in proximity to the user. While this may not seem like much of an improvement, it does allow for the pistol to be placed closer to the user, making it a more feasible option for those who need to carry it in a more concealed fashion.

Lastly, the most popular option is the cant fold. Used by both police and military personnel, the cant fold restricts the movement of the handgun to a small area on the belt, making it more difficult for the user to run from that same area or take it to another location. While the cant fold is not as sturdy or secure as a typical kydex holster, it does work fairly well in its defense against theft. Additionally, many models feature the ability to convert to an "A" ring configuration, allowing for ease in activating it without removing the holster itself.
