How to Use a Mauser Scope Mount on Your Rifle
When it comes to the topic of hunting, one of the most important pieces of equipment is a Mauser. Over the years, they have developed into some of the most desirable hunting tools available. In fact, Mausers have become so popular that when they aren't in use, they are often displayed in museums. It is these sights that show the evolution of Mauser rifles into world renowned marksman.
One of the most familiar sights in a hunting rifle is the Mauser scope. The reason for this is that a Mauser is simply a notch that has been cut into the side of the rifle. These are called Mauser twists. By far the most popular style of hunting rifle scope mount, these mounts hold the scope in place in the traditional aiming position close to the hunter's eye and bolt back to the receiver. To install these sights on a Mauser K 98, all that is needed is carefully tap and drill the receiver into the side of the rifle.
There are several different styles of Mauser scope mounts that can be used for any given application. One of the least expensive of these is the knuckle strap Mauser mount. This style of mounting utilizes a small rubber band that is pulled back through a hole in the side of the rifle. When the Mauser is cocking, the rubber band holds the scope in place. When it is released, the scope can be adjusted and aligned.
There are also iron sights that use the same concept for mounting as the knuckle strap. However, instead of being held in place by the rubber band, the iron sights use a series of clamping components that lock the iron sights in place. These clamping devices are located at the front of the gun and consist of a set of arms and clamps that are secured by grooves cut into the top of the iron sights. When these clamping units are rotated, they open to allow the scope rings to be adjusted. Some of these units are made from anodized aluminum, while others are made from high impact resistant materials.
In addition to the various styles of scope mounts, there is another type that can be purchased and utilized with a Mauser gun; the recoil lug. The recoil lug is designed to help prevent damage to the internal mechanisms of the rifle when there is a major recoil. When the recoil occurs, the internal mechanisms are typically damaged and this creates an opportunity for scope damages to occur. When one of these rifles is fired, the action of the gun causes the recoil to rotate the recoil lug. The recoil lug moves up and down along with the moving of the scope rings on the sight assembly. This action of the lug pushes the rifled tube upwards and out of its housing and as a result allows for the sight to be able to be properly oriented.
Another type of scope mount is the brass stacker. The brass stacker is similar to the chaise long and is typically found on older models of the Mauser rifle. Unlike the folding arm, the brass stacker must be mounted on the left side of the gun. To hold the brass stacker in place, it must be mounted to some sort of a lifting device or in some cases, it must be manually clamped into place on the left side of the rifle.
As previously mentioned, there are two different types of Mauser scope mount that can be utilized for a particular firearm. The first type is known as the fixed arm Mauser mount. This is essentially the same mount that has been used throughout the years but is has been modernized to incorporate a locking mechanism into the design. As the name implies, this type of mount will lock into place and will not allow the scope to be moved at all. This specific mount has an adjustable horizontal adjustment that is on a pivot.
The second type of scope mount that can be utilized with the Mauser rifle is the telescopic Mauser sight. This particular type of mount is basically where you take the scope and bring it up to your eye in a horizontal position and then bring it back down again. Because of the way that this particular sight works, it can be adjusted in an extremely small area as opposed to some of the other models. The other advantage that is comes from this particular design is that it is very effective at magnifying the sights on the Mauser rifle. However, before purchasing one of these iron sights, it is important to make sure that you know what specific adjustments need to be made in order to achieve the best accuracy possible.
