Buyer's Guide: Pistol Red Dot Sight

How to Choose a Pistol Red Dot Sight

What is pistol red dot sight? Well, it is one type of red dot sighting system that is designed to be used on pistols. Red dot sights are an optical design that is designed to work for close to medium range shots. If you want more magnification, than always recommend reading through best designed holographic sight.

How does a red dots work? A small, red (or green), LED light inside the optic platform shines on to a specially designed, clear glass lens at an adjustable angle. Because light cannot travel through objects, light reflected from the lens will appear as a colored dot on the screen. The size and color of dot are adjusted by a rotation within the housing to get the best pistol red dot sight that works with your particular optic system.

Does a sight like this offer better accuracy than a common parallax system? It depends. With a parallax system, the exit pupil of the sight is actually smaller than the entrance pupil of the eye. The exit pupil also moves slightly as the eye moves through its range of motion. With a optic system using red dots, the exit pupils do not move, and therefore the red dot is placed further back, thus a very crisp exit pupil angle.

However, besides having a smaller exit pupil, red dots placed further back also offer a better view at other magnifications. With the right mounting, you can see far away objects at night with just a red dot, and at the same time, be up close and see the sights of your firearm at a distance. Most manufacturers make mounting systems available that use gunsmith bolts or muzzle adjustments. You can also select a muzzle mount that has a locking bolt to prevent the firearm from being transferred in an accidental direction.

You should have a general idea of the size of the lens in your optic. Because some designs offer a larger lens than others, that means the diameter of your red dot scope will also affect how much you can see. The diameter of the lens is usually denoted by the size of the tube inside the housing, and also by the diameter of the objective lens. The size of the tube determines the magnification that can be achieved, and is measured in millimeters. For example, a twenty millimeter tube would give you one hundred twentieth miliraperture at a twenty millimeter objective.

There are other things that go into getting a red dot sight that you may not think about. One important thing to consider is whether to get a red dot with a coated lens or a multi-coated lens. Coated lenses are more durable and resistant to abrasion and corrosion, but they also tend to be less bright. Multi-coated lenses tend to have a little more brightening power than coated ones, but tend to scratch easier. You may prefer to select a sight that uses a coated objective lens, if you can afford it, but make sure that you understand all of the differences between the various types of coating before you buy one.

Another important consideration is the material from which the red dot sights are made. Usually they are made out of a metal such as aluminum alloy, which has the benefit of being very lightweight and durable. However, the only downside of having an aluminum alloy sight is its weight, which makes it difficult to use if you have a heavy pistol. Anodized aluminum is a much lighter alternative, and can be used with any pistol if the mounting system will support it. This material also tends to be a little brighter than the aluminum alloy option, which can be great if you like to take the optic on camping trips and other outdoor activities.

The last thing to consider when buying a red laser target sight is its reticle. The reticle of a sight varies greatly, from those that are designed for shooting skeet to those that can target both moving subjects and stationary objects. Some models even allow for crosshairs, or lines of sight to help you align your shot. It's important to understand how the reticle will work, and compare multiple models side-by-side to determine which reticle would be best for your needs.
