Magnification Power

A riflescope is generally expressed as a serial number such as 4-16x42 scope or 4x32 scope. The 4-16x42 variable magnification scope allows you to adjust the magnification from four to sixteen and stop anywhere between four and sixteen.

Fixed magnification scope 4x32 because magnification power is set at 4x. You cannot adjust it. The lens will produce a 4x image, which means the image is four times closer to your naked eye than the one you see through it. It acts as a virtual aperture in the scope tube, through which all light entering Objective Lens must pass through. The system can only be exited by light rays that pass through the exit pupil. It is measured in millimeters. Exit pupil is one of the most important factors in low light performance.

The Exit Pupil's diameter will increase if the objective lens has a larger diameter. It will result in brighter images under any lighting conditions. You can use magnification power to divide the objective lens diameter to determine the size of your exit pupil. An example is a scope with a diameter of 28mm for the objective lens and magnification power of 4x. The exit pupil will be 28/4 = 7mm. For hunting scopes, a 4mm exit pupil is recommended.

Field of View

This is the horizontal view you can see from 100 yards away when you look through your Riflescope. It is measured at 100 yards. It is more desirable for rifle scopes as a higher number will indicate a larger area. It is a rule of thumb that magnification increases, so the Field of View decreases. Magnification drops, and the Field of View increases. A scope with a larger field of view and lower power is best for quick target acquisition under close cover.

Lens Coatings

Special coatings on lenses reduce glare and reflectivity. Reflection is when light strikes a glass lens at an angle less than 48.5 degrees. Therefore, it does not pass through the Objective Lens. A thin coating of the chemical film is applied to reduce reflection. These coatings reduce light loss, glare and provide better light transmission. They also produce brighter and clearer images.

These are the terms that can use to describe coatings:

  • Coated A single layer placed on at least one surface of the lens.
  • Fully coated: One layer on all lenses surfaces.
  • Multi-coated Multiple layers on at most one surface of a lens
  • Fully Multi-Coated Multiple layers for all air to lens surfaces

Some scopes are coated to protect against scratches, while others are coated to prevent water from sticking to the glass. Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic coatings permit clearer vision in rainy or cloudy conditions.

Reticle

A reticle, a line pattern built into an eyepiece of a scope that provides an aiming point, is a reticle. These visual markers are also called crosshairs. There are many types of reticles, and each one is suitable for a specific shooting situation.

Below are some most popular reticle designs.

  • Crosshair reticle: It was the original reticle for the Riflescope. It's still one of the most loved reticles. You will find an aiming point when one horizontal and one vertical line intersect in the middle. Ideal for precise shooting but not always the best for hunting.
  • Duplex reticle: The Duplex reticle is one of the most popular on the market. This reticle is a favorite among hunters and shooters all over the world. All four thick lines that start at the circumference and extend to the center of a circle are defined. Combining thick and thin lines makes it easy to aim quickly at a moving target. Many scope manufacturers use their names for the reticle.
  • BDC Reticule: Modified Duplex reticle, the BDC (or Bullet Drop Compensation) reticle. It's designed to counter the effects of gravity on bullet drops. At 6 o'clock, some markings are visible on this reticle. These marks enable you to shoot the bullet accurately. For long-range shots, the BDC reticles work best.
  • Mil-Dot Reticle: It uses four lines of measurement to measure the distance between them. Each Mrad is equal to 3.6inches at 100 yards and 36inches at 1000 yards. A mil-dot scope can be a complex operation. This reticle is not recommended to beginners. This reticle works well for both snipers as well as long-range target shooters.
  • Illuminated/Non-Illuminated Reticles: A reticle with some light allows you to hunt in low light conditions. You can choose from a wide range of colors and combinations. Illuminated reticles of all types are possible so that you can see the crosshairs, such as Duplex Illuminated Reticle and BDC Illuminated Reticle. The simple black color reticle with no light is known as a Non-Illuminated Reticle.

Focal Plane

There are two types: the first and second focal planes (F.F.P.). Variable Magnification Power riflescopes feature reticles in either one or both of the focal planes. If power is adjusted, the reticle in the first focal plane (F.F.P.) means that the reticle changes with the target. The front focal plane is also known as the First focal plane.

The most popular reticle placement method is the Second Focal Plane (SFP), or rear focal plane. The Second Focal Plane's reticle remains the same size throughout the whole magnification range, and it doesn't change with the target. Second focal plane scopes tend to be smaller and lighter. This is why most hunters in America prefer second focal plane riflescopes.

Eye Relief

The distance between the last surface of your eyepiece and your eye is what allows you to view the entire image. Eye relief is essential for several reasons. The first is that heavy recoiling rifles can have a significant impact on the eye socket. This can pose a danger to the eye.

Second, people wearing eyeglasses require greater eye relief in order to see the entire scope. Therefore, it is important to select a scope that has suitable eye relief. A good range is 3 to 4 inches, which will suit most hunters.

Parallax Adjustment

Parallax refers to an optical condition where the image of the target does not focus precisely on the Reticle Plane. This is a problem with the scope. It will not accurately show where you aim your rifle. It is most common when magnification power exceeds 10x. The standard focusing knob adjusts your reticle to fit your eye.

Parallax adjustments give scopes a clearer view. Parallax compensation is a feature that most rifle scopes come with without an adjustable objective lens. When you're choosing the scope for long-range targets, an adjustable objective is a great choice.

Eye Piece

The scope's eyepiece is located at the end of it. It is near your eye when looking through the scope. It includes the Ocular Lens as well as the eye bell. The Riflescope is made waterproof and fog proof by Gas purging.This involves removing all air from the scope tube and filling it with a gas or mixture. The most common is nitrogen, or an Argon/Krypton mixture.The scope tube is sealed to keep the internal pressure at the same level so that fogging lenses can't occur from moist air.

Windage & Elevation

Modern scopes can adjust for impact points by using two knobs on either the side or the top of their rifle scope. The knob at the side allows for windage adjustment.
